Anne of green gables 1987 full movie dvd set series#
The chronology of Sullivan's Anne of Green Gables films is not synchronized with Montgomery's novels, largely because of the spin-off series Road to Avonlea. Montgomery had in fact written a novel focused on Anne's youngest daughter set in that same period, Rilla of Ingleside, in which Anne was a mother whose three sons were fighting in Europe. The Continuing Story was criticized principally because unlike the 1985 film Anne of Green Gables and its 1987 sequel, the screenplay is not based upon Lucy Maud Montgomery's works, but instead uses Montgomery's characters in a largely original World War I story by Sullivan and Laurie Pearson. The film was highly anticipated among fans of Anne of Green Gables, and was the most controversial and heavily criticized of the three film adaptations written and produced by Kevin Sullivan. It truly was horrible-like they plugged the Anne characters into a tired remake of Jane Eyre.Anne of Green Gables: A New Beginning (2008)Īnne of Green Gables: The Continuing Story is a 2000 miniseries television film, and the third installment in a series of four films. I'd strongly recommend against viewing the fourth, and final, Anne film. So, while I definitely want to see this on blu, I may wait just a bit before purchasing and see what happens with the price. But then, Sullivan productions have always been wildly overpriced upon first release in some cases it has taken years for the price to drop significantly. I'm assuming that it's $50 for the first film, which (despite the 199 minute running time) is too darn expensive for a single film. I've never seen this version, so I don't know how it plays. The negative for "Anne of Avonlea" was so badly scratched that they had to reassemble the first half-hour of the film from alternate takes. I do know that the camera negatives for the first two films were in shockingly bad condition. I haven't actually viewed these new transfers myself (I have the older DVD release) so I can't say how they really look. Looks like the colour timing is considerably different on the new transfer as well, so. This was never intended to be shown in widescreen, and I think they should have just stayed with the original 1.33:1 aspect ratio. There's a very little added to the sides of the frame, but the top and bottom are definitely trimmed, as you can see in these comparison screencaps: Problem is, I'm not really too thrilled about cropping the picture to a 1.78:1 aspect ratio. HD transfers were made for these films a number of years back it's about time that the results end up on blu-ray in addition to the regular DVDs that were released at that time. And the fourth-well, that was an abomination that should never, ever be viewed-or even mentioned! Heh, heh. I loved the first two "Anne" films, so those would be auto-buys for me. By the time the third one was made, Sullivan had lost rights to the books and could only create original stories or work from his previous productions.) (Only the first two miniseries were based on her works. Montgomery wrote quite a bit more about her that didn't make it into Sullivan's productions. I love me some Megan Follows as Anne, but L.

I heard there was a new TV version in the works, but nothing seems to have come of it yet.
Kinda OT, but Anne of Green Gables is a series I wouldn't mind getting a remake soon. I'd rather have black bars on the sides of the screen. These were originally made for TV, but I understand the recent remaster DVD cropped it from 4:3 to 16:9, and I'm not about that at all. (I've never seen the fourth one and only own the first one on DVD.)Īnd also if this is the complete frame. Wait, do we know anything about this release? Whether it's just the first miniseries (which is well worth it on its own) or all four? Because right now, it's on Amazon for about $50, which is a bit much to ask for just the first, but a real deal if it's for all four.
